I love vintage inspired anything.  That little touch of what was, a time gone by, happy memories, and much more.

I created this bonnet pattern with that in mind, and I’m happy to share it here with you.  You are free to sell the items you create with this pattern, but I politely request a link back to this pattern to give credit where credit is due.

This bonnet is created using bulky to super bulky handspun thick and thin merino.  You can use regular bulky yarn for this, but it won’t give you the same textured look.  It works up with about 50 to 60 yards, and quickly too!  I tend to crochet tightly, so if you need to, adjust your hook size.  The newborn bonnet should measure 5 x 5 inches to fit the average newborn head.

MATERIALS:

50 to 60 yards handspun thick and thin yarn

8mm hook – L hook

1 yard linen ribbon

(optional) flowers to accent bonnet

PATTERN:

ch2

Rnd 1: 10 hdc in 2nd ch from hook, join with sl st (10 hdc)

Rnd 2: ch 1, 2 hdc in each st around, join with sl st (20 hdc)

Rnd 3: ch1 (1 hdc, 2 hdc in next st) repeat around, join with sl st (30 hcd)

Row 1: ch 2 – counts as dc here and throughout, dc in same space as ch2, dc in next 27 sts (29 dc)

Row 2: ch 2, turn, dc in same sp, dc in each st to end (29 dc)

Rows 3-5: repeat Row 2 (29 dc)

Row 6: ch 1, sc in next 12 sts, sc2tog, sc in each remaining st to end (28 sc)

SC around neckline to clean up edges.  It doesn’t matter the number of sc, so long as you do it evenly.  Fasten off and weave in ends.

Thread linen ribbon evenly through bonnet.  Attach flowers by sewing them on (my personal choice) or use craft glue/hot glue gun.

And there you have it, a vintage inspired bonnet for your sweet pea!
